The Ancient Order of the United Workman was founded in 1868 by Freemason John Jordan Upchurch and there were many similarities to Freemasonry including three degrees. They supported the survivors of the members who passed away. Each member would provide $1 and not less than $500 to the surviving spouse or orphans of the deceased member.
